The Winter of Waiting

Our plans had called for us to be in Uganda in January, but God had other plans. Although His timing usually seems to be slower than ours, we trust that His ways are perfect.

With the exception of the remainder of our necessary financial backing, we are ready to leave for Africa. In the time before we go, I have been doing several things:  making contacts and telling people about the awesome opportunity the Lord has opened for us, reaching out to people in our immediate sphere of influence, preparing materials for classes I’ll teach in the fall, and, most importantly, waiting on God.

During the time of waiting, I’ve been re-reading Andrew Murray’s Waiting on God. One encouraging passage speaks to our immediate need: “In waiting on God it is of infinite consequence that we not only submit because we are compelled to, but because we lovingly and joyfully consent to be in the hands of our blessed Father.”

This is our desire, and we claim His promise, “… they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary;    they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31 [ESV]).

Present Plans

While all our plans are subject to God’s overruling, there are a number of reasons why it would be desirable for us to get to Uganda this summer.

·    We are needed on the field.

·   Text Box: “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.”
Tertullian
Bruce has committed to teach classes in the fall.

·   A missionary couple from AIM has offered to sublet us their home for six months beginning this summer.

·    We would very much like for Celeste to be able to complete her junior and senior years of high school at the same school in Africa.

Please pray with us that God would be pleased to send us to the field this summer.

Peace in Sudan

One of Colin Powell’s last official actions as Secretary of State was brokering a peace agreement between the warring factions in Sudan. Since the Islamic regime seized power in 1983, an estimated 2 million Christians have lost their lives. In spite of the persecution, the church has grown rapidly.

Under this agreement, the South will enjoy a degree of autonomy. Religious freedom is an important element of the accord. Although Islamic law will still prevail in the North, it will no longer be enforced in the South. In addition, the black, Christian South will share oil revenues with the Arab, Muslim North. After six years, the South will be able to vote for its independence.

Please pray that the new political arrangement will serve to further the advancement of God’s Kingdom. Pray also for the Sudanese students who are currently receiving their training at Westminster Theological College, that God will use them mightily to build His Church in Africa’s largest country, Sudan.

Family News

We thank God that Tim is adapting well to life at Covenant College. He is now in his second semester there and is excelling academically while enjoying the overall college experience. We have been able to see him a few times on his breaks.

Celeste is taking 10th grade on DVD through Bob Jones. She also is doing well academically but misses her friends from school and church in Pensacola. Thankfully she has been able to be involved with the youth group at her cousins’ church in Asheville. Pray that God would provide just the right place for her to go to school for her junior and senior years. Presently she is leaning toward attending Rift Valley Academy.

Pam and I continue to enjoy God’s hand of blessing on our lives and on our family. However, Pam does struggle with frequent migraines. Please pray for healing.

 Praise

God is meeting all our needs and allowing us to enjoy life’s highest privilege of knowing, loving and serving Him. We thank Him for you as well. Your prayers and gifts are the fuel God uses to feed the flame of His gospel ministry through us.
